After signing the lease, Kavya finally got the keys to her new apartment. The first thing she did was set up the utilities — electricity, water, and internet — by calling each company and giving them her new address. Some of them asked for a deposit before turning on the service.

The apartment came with a few appliances already installed: a refrigerator, a stove, and a dishwasher in the kitchen. She still needed furniture, so she ordered a couch and a bed and picked up smaller things like a trash can and a shower curtain from a nearby store.

Her landlord stopped by to show her where the circuit breaker was and how to change the air filter. He reminded her that rent was due on the first of each month. Within a week, the empty rooms started to feel like home.
